Did you know Hitler had a similar Act?
BLAIR'S 'ENABLING ACT'
http://www.newalliance.org.uk/ccb.htm
The Civil Contingencies Act (formerly known as the Civil Contingencies
Bill) was passed on 18.11.04. It could be described as "a nightmare come
true".
Supposed to modernise civil emergency arrangements, it goes well beyond
this, aiming to allow the Government and Ministers to exercise almost absolute
powers at the slightest excuse.
When Parliament's Joint Committee reported on the original Bill in
November 2003, they were alarmed that:
"In the wrong hands, it could be used to undermine or even remove
legislation
underpinning the British Constitution and infringe human rights".
Lord Lucas likened the slightly-amended Bill to Hitler's 'Enabling Act'.
"... Are we opening up our system to the equivalent of what happened in
Germany in 1933, when it became possible for an extreme party
legitimately to
hijack a democracy and turn it into something totalitarian?"

# Mon, Nov 29 7:30 pm Film Title: The Future of Food
Unitarian Hall 505 E. Charleston Rd. Palo Alto $5 to $10
"The Future of Food" offers an in-depth investigation into the
disturbing truth behind the unlabeled GMO products that have quietly
filled grocery store shelves over the past decade. From the test tube,
to the farm field, to the supermarket, the film follows the personal
stories of the farmers in the U.S., Canada who have been sued by large
multi-national corporations for continuing the time-honored tradition
of saving seeds; of the scientists in the U.S. and Europe who have been
censored for raising serious public and environmental health concerns;
and finally, of the consumers, who are beginning to question why this
has escaped the attention of both the media and the Federal agencies in
charge of keeping our food safe. "The Future of Food" unravels the
complex web of market and political forces that are changing the nature
of what we eat. Food has gone from being a basic need to being part of
a larger billion-dollar battle to control the world's food production.
The film will be followed by an open discussion led by the film's
producer, writer, and director, Deborah Garcia.

CALL TO ACTION: Moving the Agenda for California Women 2005
SBC Media Center 370 Third Street (at Harrison) SF
Opening Reception, Circle of Courage Award to House Minority Leader
Nancy Pelosi, and a Conversation with a panel of California Women
Legislators Saturday, December 4, 2004, 8:30 am – 5:30
-Reviewing the status of California women and girls for Beijing + 10
-Crafting a 2005 Strategic Plan for California women and girls
Join with a group of women leaders, representing California-based
grassroots organizations, women’s commissions, elected women from all
over the state, and special guests working with the global women’s
community to adopt a 2005 California-focused action plan for addressing
the issues facing women and girls. Using the 1995 International
Platform for Action, adopted in 1995 by 189 countries in Beijing as a
guide, participants will assess California’s progress towards meeting
the goals of the global plan and develop strategies for moving forward
in the coming year.
The California Women’s Agenda, a project of the Women’s Intercultural
Network (WIN), convened similar meetings in 1996, which created the
first CAWA State action plan. In the year 2000, CAWA submitted a
(Beijing + 5) document to then Secretary of State Madeleine Albright
for inclusion in the national progress report forwarded by the Clinton
Administration to the United Nations. Another report to the UN is due
in March of 2005 and CAWA and the state Commission on the Status of
Women have joined together for this CALL TO ACTION to provide a vehicle
for the participation of more women and girls in developing a
meaningful report.
Check the websites of the CAlifornia Women’s Agenda http://www.win-cawa.org
and the Commission on the Status of Women http://www.statusofwomen.ca.gov

special guests. Register on-line NOW, or please send an e-mail to the

# Fri Dec 3 SF Golden Gate Park Stroll/Beginners' Delight
/Bats Galore in San Francisco 6:45 p.m.
Cast off the dreaded work week and come seek a mysterious partner in
this winter eve's outing, wandering through SF's Golden Gate Park as
we celebrate the first US flag raising, Mitsuo Fuchida's birth, and
the first neon tonight, in a level hike that should take random
directions before we adjourn to our optional liquid and/or solid
repast at a local coffee house. No guarantees on mating, but
passable weather and good company is practically guaranteed. We'll
break somewhere to sip beverages at an appropriate location, and look
for bats flying over a lake. Flashlights, beverages in thermoses,
anything else you tend to need in the dark, and sturdy footwear not
bad ideas. Distance and difficulty perfect for beginners. Rain
doesn't cancel.
DIRECTIONS: If you opt out of self-carpool location #6 at 5:30 p.m.,
meet us under the stone lions at the SE corner of Fulton and 8th
Aves. at 6:45. From the south, 280, take Hwy 1/19th Ave. exit, stay
in right lanes at the 19th Ave./Juniperro Serra split to continue up
J. Serra to Sloat, left and continue to the Great Hwy, right. Go
past the park and the remodeled windmill and turn right on Fulton.
Fulton is the northern border of Golden Gate Park and extends from
the ocean to the Opera House. Full directions, maps, etc., at
http://www.laughingbear.org
ORGANIZER: If obsessed by questions, call Jonathon at 415/752-2699,
6 - 9 p.m. (If returning a call to you is outside San Francisco,
please continue to call), or email at grizzly@laughingbear.org Cell
calls from 7 p.m. at 415/710-2533. Co-listed with various groups.

# 12/4: Protest Animal Cruelty! (pacifica)
Chickens are inquisitive and interesting animals who are thought to be
as intelligent as cats, dogs, and even primates. When in their natural
surroundings, rather than on factory farms, they form friendships and
social hierarchies, recognize one another, care for their young, and
enjoy a full life of dust-bathing, making nests, roosting in trees, and
more.
PETA is asking KFC to eliminate the worst abuses that chickens suffer
on the factory farms and in the slaughterhouses of its suppliers,
including live scalding, life-long crippling, and painful debeaking.
The more than 750 million chickens killed each year for KFC are
tortured in ways that would result in felony cruelty-to-animals charges
if cats or dogs were the victims, but KFC still refuses to make
changes. As the leader in the chicken industry, KFC has a
responsibility to ensure that the chickens raised for its buckets are
protected from the worst cruelties.

# Sat Dec 25 Charlemagne Coronation Morning
SF Golden Gate Park Lakes Hike 10:00 A.M.
Lack of hunks and hunklettes under the morning tree, or simply not up
for shredding non-biodegradable paper under a dead tree today? Join
Jonathon Eros in celebrating Charlemagne's 800 A.D. coronation with a
flat, leisurely loop that should take about 2 - 2.5 hours to meander
past most of the lakes in the park. Consensus choice for multiple
restroom stops and organizer's tour guide spiels. Layered clothing
choices may be needed at solstice but probably not. Hike begins at
the southeast corner of Fulton and 36th Ave. at 10:00 a.m. Post-hike
options for food/entertainment shall be discussed. Oh, and extra
points for bringing along particularly weird Xmaz gifts for our
viewing pleasure. DIRECTIONS: From the south, 280, take Hwy 1/19th
Ave. exit, stay in right lanes at the 19th Ave./Juniperro Serra split
to continue up J. Serra to Sloat, left and continue to the Great Hwy,
right. Go past the park and the remodeled windmill and turn right on
Fulton. Or try self-carpool location #6 at 8:55 a.m. Maps,
directions, etc. if you email.
ORGANIZER: Queries to 415/752-2699, 6 - 9 p.m., but please continue
to call if organizer's return call to you is long distance, or try
grizzly@laugingbear.org (might not be returned after 12/24). If
you're really lost, try organizer's cell at 415/710-2533. Co-listed
with various groups. If it rains, we'll be brave and will stumble
along anyway.
